Heavy Downpours Unleash Severe Flooding in Spain
Authorities reported rainfall reaching up to 100 liters per square meter (approximately 4 inches) within just a few hours. Police teams responded to calls to rescue several individuals trapped in their vehicles amid rapidly rising waters.
The town of Aldaia in Valencia was among the most affected, where the La Saleta ravine overflowed, flooding central streets. “However, anti-flood barriers held,” officials noted, preventing further damage.
In Zaragoza province’s Cuarte de Huerva, another river overflowed late Sunday. Mayor Elena Lacalle described the situation to a public broadcaster: “It’s a bit calmer now, but the beginning was chaotic. We are trying to evaluate the damage.”
Spain’s meteorological service issued a red alert covering Valencia’s coast until midnight, as well as southern Tarragona and northern Castellon through midday Tuesday.
Over 60 municipalities across the Mediterranean region suspended classes and nonessential activities, impacting roughly 25,000 children and their families.
Transportation networks suffered significant disruption, with train delays reported, Metrovalencia operating on reduced schedules, and multiple highways blocked by floodwaters. Authorities urged residents to avoid travel where possible.
This event adds to a growing pattern of extreme weather in Spain linked by scientists to climate change. Last October, similar heavy rains devastated the same area, resulting in one of Spain’s deadliest natural disasters, with approximately 232 fatalities.
The urgency of the situation remains high as officials continue damage assessments and monitor weather conditions.
